Tadrart Red & Algiers

The Tadrart Rouge is one of the Sahara’s most breathtaking landscapes: red sandstone canyons, towering dunes, and ancient rock art that whisper the memory of past civilizations. Part of the Tassili n’Ajjer cultural landscape and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tadrart Red offers an unforgettable journey through Algeria’s spectacular desert.

This special itinerary combines the silence and beauty of the Sahara with the vibrant history of Algiers. Guided by Ikewen, travelers will experience authentic Tuareg hospitality, sleep beneath star-filled skies, explore prehistoric rock art, and discover the rich cultural heritage of Algeria’s capital.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Djanet

Arrival at Djanet Airport, where our team will welcome you and transfer you to your accommodation. Time to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead. Overnight in a guesthouse or hotel.

Day 2 – From Djanet to Tadrart

After breakfast, we depart by 4×4 vehicles towards the magnificent Tadrart region. Along the way we cross spectacular desert landscapes before stopping for lunch in Tin Arso Valley. In the afternoon we continue deeper into Tadrart and set up camp in El Berj Valley, surrounded by dramatic sandstone formations. Dinner and overnight under the stars.

Day 3 – Rock Art and Moul n’Aga

Breakfast at camp before exploring ancient rock engravings and remarkable mountain formations that reveal the rich history of the Sahara. After lunch and a short siesta in Markawndi Valley, we continue towards the stunning dunes of Moul n’Aga, where we enjoy sunset, dinner, and another unforgettable night in the desert.

Day 4 – Through the Heart of Tadrart

Morning begins among the dunes of Moul n’Aga before continuing through breathtaking valleys and sandstone landscapes. Lunch will be served in Bouhedian Valley before reaching the magnificent dunes of Tin Merzouga, one of the most iconic places in the Sahara. Overnight camping beneath the stars.

Day 5 – Across Tadrart Rouge

After breakfast, we continue our journey across the spectacular landscapes of Tadrart Rouge. Lunch is served at Ouan Zouaten before reaching Aglati, where we establish our final desert camp. Enjoy another evening of Tuareg hospitality, music, tea, and storytelling around the fire.

Day 6 – Return to Djanet

Breakfast at camp before departing for Tin Mentahe for lunch. In the afternoon we return to Djanet, where there is time to visit the local market and prepare for the journey to Algiers. Overnight in Djanet or transfer according to flight schedule.

Day 7 – Discovering Algiers

Arrival in Algiers and guided exploration of the capital. Visit the historic Kasbah, stroll through the beautiful Hamma Botanical Garden, and discover the iconic Martyrs’ Memorial. Enjoy lunch at a traditional Algerian restaurant before transferring to the airport or your hotel, depending on your return flight.

Difficulty level: Easy – comfortable and accessible for travelers with normal physical
condition.

Language: Fully guided in English by local Tuareg guides.

Safety: Algeria is safe to visit. Local Tuareg guides will care for you throughout the trip and
arrange all permits in advance for a smooth and worry-free journey.

Group size: Limited (up to 12 participants) for profound connection and
respect for fragile desert ecosystems.

Important notes:
Accommodation based on twin-sharing in hotel.

During the tour in Sahara accommodation is in the tents (1-2 people in the tent). Tents and matrasses are provided. Sleeping bag is recommended and not provided.  The camps do not provide water for washing or showers.

Practical Recommendations

– Wear respectful clothing: long sleeves and long trousers are recommended.

– Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, scarf, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

– Bring moisturizing cream or Vaseline for dry skin and lips.

– Carry a personal first aid kit (bandages, disinfectant, basic medicines).

– Take a pocket or head torch and a power bank for charging your phone or camera.

– A warm sleeping bag and pillow can make nights more comfortable.

– A large scarf is useful against wind and desert sand (you can also buy one on arrival).

– Wet wipes and toilet paper are practical for days without a bathroom.

– Don’t forget travel insurance.
